Good on you Julia for seeking the wisdom of Ramos Horta

I am appalled at the irresponsible journalism which is twisting the intent of the government, even your carefully chosen words in relation to the refugee issue.

This is yet another example of the irresponsibility and incompetence which is pervading Australia following the Howard years, and the incompetence and unprofessional conduct which pervades much of the public service causing the massive problems we have seen with the schools and pink batts programs. The government needs to find a way to show up the fact that it is those who are focused solely on their own hip pockets who are causing these problems and not government policies- which are commendable.

President Jose Ramos-Horta of East Timor is a Nobel Laureate. He and Prime Minister Gusmao are possible the most appropriate people on the entire planet for Prime Minister Gillard to approach over the refugee issue. In Australia, as in much of the western world, we do not value or even acknowledge the wisdom of our elders. President Ramos Horta alluded to this when he said on Lateline that his wisdom had been sought. Instead of the media misreporting and manipulating what PM Gillard actually said which simply enables the opposition to score cheap political points, why are we not congratulating her on her forethought in consulting the most appropriate elders in our region, why are we not demanding our politicians take the politics out of this argument, and why are we not demanding a bipartisan response for whatis fundamentally a humanitarian not a political issue.
